Shadow of
Manazanar
Colossus West's debut album
Shadow of Manzanar is a new 4-movement suite for 20-piece jazz orchestra based on the WWII internment experience of artistic director Levi Saelua's family. Inspired by the Manzanar internment camp diary of his great-grandfather, Karl Yoneda, Levi spent a year visiting Manzanar in each season to develop a personal connection to the desolate region of California in the eastern Sierras. This suite will be the centerpiece of Colossus West's debut album. Sign up below to receive updates along our journey!
From Levi:
"Experiencing the dramatically different conditions of each season, paired with reading Grandpa Karl's Manzanar diary, deepened my ability to connect to my family's experience in that time and place in history and its long-term effects on those of us who inherited the legacy of the Japanese-American internment. I hope that by translating all of this into music, I can bring awareness to what Karl referred to as 'Manzanar's shadow'."
